The Fujifilm GFX 100RF and the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ82D are two digital cameras that were revealed to the public, respectively, in March 2025 and July 2024. Both the GFX 100RF and the FZ82D are fixed lens compact cameras that are based on a medium format (GFX 100RF) and a 1/2.3-inch (FZ82D) sensor. Any camera decision will obviously take relative prices into account. The retail prices at the time of the camera’s release place the model in the market relative to other models in the producer’s line-up and the competition. The FZ82D was launched at a markedly lower price (by 90 percent) than the GFX 100RF, which puts it into a different market segment. Usually, retail prices stay at first close to the launch price, but after several months, discounts become available. Later in the product cycle and, in particular, when the replacement model is about to appear, further discounting and stock clearance sales often push the camera price considerably down.
Sensor comparison
The size of the imaging sensor is a crucial determinant of image quality. A large sensor will generally have larger individual pixels that offer better low-light sensitivity, provide wider dynamic range, and have richer color-depth than smaller pixels in a sensor of the same technological generation. Moreover, a large sensor camera will give the photographer more control over depth-of-field in the image and, thus, the ability to better isolate a subject from the background. On the downside, larger sensors are more costly to manufacture and tend to lead to bigger and heavier cameras and lenses.
Of the two cameras under consideration, the Fujifilm GFX 100RF features a medium format sensor and the Panasonic FZ82D a 1/2.3-inch sensor. The sensor area in the FZ82D is 98 percent smaller. As a result of these sensor size differences, the cameras have a format factor of, respectively, 0.79 and 5.6. Both cameras feature a native aspect ratio (sensor width to sensor height) of 4:3.

With 101.8MP, the GFX 100RF offers a higher resolution than the FZ82D (18MP), but the GFX 100RF nevertheless has larger individual pixels (pixel pitch of 3.76μm versus 1.25μm for the FZ82D) due to its larger sensor. Moreover, the GFX 100RF is a somewhat more recent model (by 8 months) than the FZ82D, and its sensor might have benefitted from technological advances during this time that further enhance the light gathering capacity of its pixels. Coming back to sensor resolution, it should be mentioned that neither of the two cameras has an anti-alias filter installed, so they are able to capture all the detail the sensor resolves.
The resolution advantage of the Fujifilm GFX 100RF implies greater flexibility for cropping images or the possibility to print larger pictures. The maximum print size of the GFX 100RF for good quality output (200 dots per inch) amounts to 58.2 x 43.7 inches or 147.9 x 110.9 cm, for very good quality (250 dpi) 46.6 x 34.9 inches or 118.3 x 88.8 cm, and for excellent quality (300 dpi) 38.8 x 29.1 inches or 98.6 x 74 cm. The corresponding values for the Panasonic FZ82D are 24.5 x 18.4 inches or 62.2 x 46.6 cm for good quality, 19.6 x 14.7 inches or 49.7 x 37.3 cm for very good quality, and 16.3 x 12.2 inches or 41.5 x 31.1 cm for excellent quality prints.
The GFX 100RF has on-sensor phase detect pixels, which results in fast and reliable autofocus acquisition even during live view operation.
The Fujifilm GFX 100RF has a native sensitivity range from ISO 80 to ISO 12800, which can be extended to ISO 40-102400. The corresponding ISO settings for the Panasonic Lumix DC-FZ82D are ISO 80 to ISO 3200, with the possibility to increase the ISO range to 80-6400.
Technology-wise, both cameras are equipped with BSI-CMOS (Backside Illuminated Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor) sensors. Both cameras use a Bayer filter for capturing RGB colors on a square grid of photosensors. This arrangement is found in most digital cameras.

One difference between the cameras concerns the presence of an on-board flash. The FZ82D has one, while the GFX 100RF does not. While the built-in flash of the FZ82D is not very powerful, it can at times be useful as a fill-in light.
The reported shutter speed information refers to the use of the mechanical shutter. Yet, some cameras only have an electronic shutter, while others have an electronic shutter in addition to a mechanical one. In fact, both cameras under consideration feature an electronic shutter, which makes completely silent shooting possible. However, this mode is less suitable for photographing moving objects (risk of rolling shutter) or shooting under artificial light sources (risk of flickering).

Concerning the storage of imaging data, both the GFX 100RF and the FZ82D write their files to SDXC cards. The GFX 100RF features dual card slots, which can be very useful in case a memory card fails. In contrast, the FZ82D only has one slot. The GFX 100RF supports UHS-II cards (on both slots), while the FZ82D can use UHS-I cards.

It is notable that the GFX 100RF has a microphone port, which is missing on the FZ82D. Such an external microphone input can help to substantially improve the quality of audio recordings when a good external microphone is used.
